UNC Gets Tough Overtime Win at Clemson

Tonight, #1 rated North Carolina came from behind to pull out a 90-88 overtime road win at Clemson. Clemson gave UNC everything they had but the undermanned Heels managed to get it done in dramatic fashion, with a Wayne Ellington three pointer sealing the game in the final second of overtime.

These kinds of games are almost essential in separating wheat from the chaff, in terms of building Final Four/Championship contending teams. Make no mistake, Clemson came out jacked through the roof at the prospect of knocking off the #1 team in the nation on national television. And Clemson's arena can be extremely hostile to visiting teams. The Tar Heels passed the test with flying colors -- consider it a stepping stone to the Final Four. North Carolina will be a better team for having gutted out this win.

North Carolina deserves their #1 ranking. They're the real deal.

I hope you're right. I haven't been this nervous since Luther Head's shot that could have put Illinois up in the final seconds of the 2005 Championship game. Thankfully, Head missed that 3 in '05 and Ellington hit his 3 against Clemson tonight. I still think we're good enough to be a Championship team, but tonight's close call has me a bit on edge.

On top of that, Kansas and UCLA scare me.

Maaaan,

Those refs ain't finna let Clemson beat Roy Williams, North Carolina and the great white hype, Tyler Hansbrough.

This thing was in the bag before the jump ball.

Y'all know what I'm talkin' about.

I liked it when Hansbrough got his contact knocked out, though. But I wish it was his teeth that got knocked out instead.

I am certainly glad to see that the Heels got past Clemson, albeit in nail biting fashion. As y'all probably know, South Carolinians are a backward and reactionary lot, with nary a tooth among them (although everybody loves Charleston, as do I). It would have been difficult to stomach a loss at the hands of such a lower status, agricultural and engineering school (especially since it's in the Palmetto state).

As a UNC alumnus and life long Heels fan, I bleed Carolina blue. As such, I've ridden the high of numerous National Championships, but I've also suffered through some tough times. I've suffered through the lean years of the Guthridge era (anybody could have gotten to two Fours in four years with the team that Dean left behind -- Coach Gut's inability to win championships with those teams was one of the biggest disappointments of my life). I persevered during the darkest days of the Matt Doherty era. But I'm not sure that I could have stomached a loss to Clemson.

A loss to Clemson would have been the biggest blow to North Carolinians since General Joseph E.Johnston was forced to retreat from Sherman's Union troops at the Battle of Bentonville in March of 1865 (my great great granddaddy was a Confederate General, and he didn't think all that highly of Johnston, by the way). Well, that or a loss to Duke.

Go Heels.

Why don't you talk about IUPUI?

You never talk about IUPUI.

Your site is ok, but it would be better if you talked about IUPUI.

I think you need to start talking about IUPUI.

I mean "UNC Gets Tough Overtime Win at Clemson" is
a little vanilla. You ought to peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create article headlines tto grab viewers to open the
links. You might add a vjdeo or a related pic or two to grab
people interested about everything've got to say. In my opinion,
it might bring your blog a little livelier.
