Illinois Apologizes for Fans' Behavior

One day after Illinois fans put on a spectacle of poor sportsmanship during Illinois' home contest with Eric Gordon and Indiana, the University of Illinois has formally condemned the behavior of their unruly fans.

Illinois called their fans' behavior "disappointing and intolerable."

The Big Ten said that they don't plan to take any action against Illinois for their fan's behavior.

This is disappointing. Illinois fans are known to be among the classiest and most knowledgeable college basketball fans around.

I was certainly quite impressed by Illini Nation when we faced Illinois in the 2005 national championship game.

I, and many of my Carolina brethren, had the opportunity to meet and interact with scores of classy Illini fans at the '05 Final Four in St. Louis.

I had such a great experience with classy Illinois fans that I've been pulling for the Illini ever since that weekend (with the obvious exception of our home loss to them in the '05/06 ACC Big Ten challenge).

But it was just such a disappointment to see my friends from the Illini Nation act in such a classless manner toward the Gordon kid the other night.

I know that it's been a tough couple of years, but Thursday night's game was a black mark against a program and a fan base that's normally the epitome of the word "classy."

I'm glad that the university came out and issued this statement.

It shows me that, although there were some knuckleheads at the game the other night, the Illinois basketball program is still all about class.
